How do I register a horse?
Cost:
$149 - new full registration
$59.50 - new base registration
Registering a horse with a FULL registration, enables the owner to acquire a valid competition licence, allowing that horse to participate in above the line activities. The certificate of registration is a means of identifying the horse and establishing ownership of the horse for competition purposes only. Before you submit a registration application for your horse, please ensure that all the information is complete. Incomplete or incorrect work will be returned. Only current financial members are able to register horses and all horses must have a microchip number, meeting the AS5018/5019.
Horses must have Full registration to hold competition licences, this is basically a "licence" to compete in your chosen discipline and used to be referred to as a performance card. You must purchase multiple licences if you compete in multiple disciplines i.e. one for show jumpiung, one for dressage etc. Competition licences are renewed annually with your membership. If your horse is Base registered and you need to upgrade to Full registration to purchase licences, you can do this via your MYEA portal and pay the difference between the two.
There are two types of registration available for horses.
- Full Horse – Lifetime registration of competitive horses permitting participation in equestrian competitive activities.
- Base Horse – lifetime registration for horses not actively competing in competitive equestrian activities (except for jumping, from 1 Jan 2024 all horse jumping is open competitions under 1.04m require a minimum of base horse registration), for owners who would like horse registrations for the purpose of bio security or securing a name.
- All owners must be current Competitor, Participant, Supporter or Commercial members of Equestrian Tasmania.
- The horse must be Microchipped to Australian Standard.
- Horse names must be unique. You cannot use the same name as another horse, nor can you change the spelling slightly or use a variation of the same name. You can check to see if the name is taken by searching the EA Database (Coming soon).
- You must supply 5 name preferences.
- Prefix Initials are not permitted, neither are numbers, punctuation marks or special characters. Please refer to the General Regulations to ensure your choce of name complys.
- If a horse has been registered with another recognised breed society, it may be EA registered using that name. This rule also applies to horses being imported into Australia. To use the name, you must supply a copy of the certificate.
- Any horse which was not born in Australia may be subject to additional grading points. Please consult the discipline specific rule book for more details.

How do I lease a horse? Providing a lease notification?
Cost: $68.50 - Lease notification of Registered horse
There are certain EA Disciplines and Classes that require the rider (if they are not the listed EA Owner of the horse), to have an EA Lease Notification in place to be able to compete. Please refer to the specific Rules of the Sport to see if this applies to you.
It is a requirement that both the Owner and Lessee of the horse are current financial members of EA. And that the Owner, remains a current EA member for the period of the Lease, to allow the Lessee to compete the horse in competitive classes.
You can register a Horse Lease notification via your EA membership portal - Login and navigate to the shop section. Please note this is just a lease notification, not a formal lease agreement, this is the responsibility of both parties.
How do I change my horse's name?
Cost: $192.50
From 1 July 2015 onwards, breeders and studs who are a member of Equestrian Australia or an affiliate Breed Society can register a horse's prefix from birth and it can no longer be changed without their written permission. Written consent by the breeder may be given at the time of the sale of the horse or at some later date to edit a prefix. This is to ensure that the breeding prefix of any registered horse would remain the same from birth, unless a change was agreed by both breeder and current owner and enables better recognition and acknowledgement of the breeder's significant role in the succes of a sport horse's career. This does not apply to horses registered prior to 1 July 2015.
Please ensure you check the EA General Regulations in relation to the above and also the requirments of horse name regulations.
If you wish to change the name of your horse login to you EA membership portal and select shop, go to the Tasmanian section and select ownership and transfer.
- Please use the form Horse Change Name
